Be Discovered 2011 is a campaign to find previously undiscovered writing talent from West London for the stage.

In 2009 award winning ANGLE Theatre discovered five new playwrights through its previous East London campaign.

This year ANGLE will be working in partnership with new writing powerhouse the Bush Theatre, launching its latest campaign across six boroughs in West London to find raw and distinctive voices that will breathe new life into the theatre.

ANGLE will build on its successful legacy of un-earthing and producing raw new talent and is inviting first-time writers from West London to submit their plays to Be Discovered 2011.

The plays will be read and shortlisted and the final chosen plays will be presented at the Bush Theatre in their Autumn/Winter season.

The deadline for submissions is 30th June 2011.

We are looking for:

  • Original, bold and charismatic writing for the stage.
  • We are looking for people who have never had a play performed or published.
  • We are seeking first time playwrights from any background: from young people over the age of 18 to pensioners to writers whose first language is not English.

Please note submissions will be accepted from the following boroughs: Hillingdon, Harrow, Hounslow, Ealing, Brent and Hammersmith and Fulham in West London.

To enter:
Writers must submit at least three scenes of an unperformed play with no more than five characters. Your writing must be for the stage.

Your play must be submitted with the application form (which can be downloaded here link to leaflet and application form) and with a stamped self-addressed envelope for feedback. The deadline for submissions is 30th June 2011. Plays should be marked clearly " ANGLE at the Bush Theatre " and sent to:

Angle at the Bush, The Bush Theatre, Shepherds Bush Green, London W12 8QD

Please note that scripts will not be returned and we will only accept hard copies.

What happens next:
All plays will be read by a group of experienced multi-lingual readers and will receive written feedback. Last time we employed the expertise of established theatre professionals as our panel of judges such as Paul Miller (Sheffield Crucible) Dawn Walton (Eclipse) and Lin Coghlan (National Theatre). This year we will increase our panel to include more leading lights of the British stage.

Shortlisted writers will be offered the chance to further develop their work with a professional team at the Bush Theatre and given the opportunity to be part of their wider new writing community.

Selected writers will work towards a public theatre performance at the Bush Theatre.

The plays will appear as part of the Bush Theatre's exciting new Autumn/Winter season in their new home in 2011. Plays will be performed in English.

"Angle seeks to unearth raw and charismatic new writing and takes its inspiration from local people. We are delighted to launch our search for the next generation of playwrights at the Bush theatre with its extraordinary track record in discovering new talent. It is great to be part of the Bush theatre's story, particularly at this moment in its illustrious history. Its new premises in Shepherds Bush will secure the theatre's links with its rich and diverse community." Charlotte Gwinner, Artistic Director ANGLE Theatre.

We are thrilled to be working in partnership with the new writing powerhouse the Bush theatre. The Bush will be supporting us throughout the project and we'll be presenting our final selected plays as part of their Autumn/Winter programme.

We'd like to thank all our excellent partners this year: The Bush Theatre and Pentagram who have once again designed our campaign; and our generous supporters: Arts Council England, The Foyle Foundation and The Wates Foundation, all without whom our latest project would not be possible.
